A keyword is simply a query, answer, solution, and topic that an article or content would generally be focused on.
When people find themselves on the internet searching for solutions to their problems, or simply looking for an answer to an unknown question, the words or phrase that is input into the search engine is known as “KEYWORD”!
Often times content creators find themselves overwhelmed with this very important yet simple concept. Why is that? It is because they tend to overthink it.
Yes, I know! I know you want organic traffic. I know you want people to see your articles or blog posts. I know you want your website/s to be an authority and a trusted one to both search engines and your audiences.
All of these are well understood and highly relatable!
But, before you get to that stage, what actions are you taking or willing to take to actually achieve those desirable outcomes?
Not sure what your exact answers would be, but I can assure you that I do have an idea of what you have in mind.
One of them being publishing good high quality and quantity contents (whether they are outsourced or not). It is one of the most important factors of SEO.
Anyways, let’s keep this short and get straight to the point of the articles!
How To Do A Keyword Research – “The Right And Smart Ways To Go About It”
Okay, since you now know what a keyword is from the introductory paragraphs above, let’s also have a bit of a good idea of its importance.
Why Are Keywords So Important?
The Basic Foundation To Search Engine Optimization: Keywords are used to optimize your contents for the search engines.
By targeting specific keywords in your articles, search engines like Google, for example, can find and understand what your content is about thereby indexing it for the world to see.
Thereafter, people can find your articles from wherever they may be on planet earth!
Even better, it allows your content to get ranked on the first page–a higher position than just being indexed, which allows more people to see it.
People will not just find it, but will EASILY find it without too much stress and time!
Here’s the difference between ranked and indexed;
When your content is indexed, it simply means your article is available on Google. It can be seen on a particular page, let’s say page 5. But,
Ranked is used when an article is available on the first page of the search engine.
Come to think about it, in this present world when people are so occupied with their very busy lifestyle, how many people do you think navigate beyond the first page of the engines when searching for something?
Absolutely None, or to be fair let’s say about 20%!
That’s it. Not many people have the luxury of time to navigate many pages. Most times what they want can be seen on the first page.
It is the same reason there is very high competition and quota to meet for an article to be ranked.
Also, in the midst of this fierce competition, your content must be of very high quality, that is, serve its purpose by helping others.
Furthermore, It must be of very high quantity as well, which means it must be highly informative and lengthy.
Here is another important need for Keyword. You don’t just set a ship to sail without providing it with a course, the same thing with your contents. You don’t just write randomly by discussing all sort of unrelated topics.
You must have an intent while writing your articles. Your contents must be focused on a particular topic of interest!
That is your keyword!
What Happens Next?
Now that you have an idea of what you would like to write about, you have an intention as to who you would like to help, and in what way you would like to help them.
Then, what happens next?
Remember our first focus was helping people–in relation to their topic of interest. Our second focus at this stage is the search engines.
Your content must be present on the search engines for people to see it in the first place. Just in case you are still wondering why focusing on the search engine is important, try answering these questions yourself;
- Where is the first place people go to find answers to their queries?
- Who delivers the most relevant answer and response to people’s queries? And,
- Where would your articles, posts, etc. be found after they are published?
You must have answered “SEARCH ENGINES” (or most commonly “Google”) to all the above questions!
With that, I believe you understand and can picture better the importance of considering search engines and why our contents should always be optimized for them.
When we talk about search engine optimization, the FIRST THING to consider would be our keywords, just as I have mentioned many times already.
This is where keyword research comes in to play!
What Is A Keyword Research?
Keyword research is a PROCESS of finding the most searched words or phrase around a particular topic of intent that you can use directly in a post title and within your content.
In other words, you could say, it is the process of finding the phrase that people are mostly typing into Google (For Example) when searching for something around the topic they have in mind. It best summarizes the whole idea of your content.
This phrase ideally should be of very low competition, often referred to as LOW HANGING FRUIT.
This means the number of competing post from other websites that are ranking on the search engines like Google is not TOO many.
To find and be able to detect the exact number of competing posts and search results during my keyword research, I especially love to use Jaaxy, a search engine optimization (SEO) keyword research tool.
Step-By-Step Guide To Researching Keywords
Step 1: Using The Alphabet Soup Technique
The alphabet soup technique helps one to find related topic ideas by using all the different letters in the English alphabets with your keyword.
Let’s use the topic of this article for example. I want to write and enlighten people about “KEYWORD RESEARCH,” but I have no idea what to target as my keyword in my article title and overall content.
Using Jaaxy, the result in the image below shows the topic ideas with the letter “a”. If you scroll down, you will be able to see the other letters results as well;
As seen below, a great alternative to Jaaxy for this Alphabet Soup Technique is Soovle.
Unlike Jaaxy, Soovle allows you to see the result for different search engines like YouTube, Wikipedia, Bing, etc. But, you have to input each of the letters (along with the keyword) yourself, and the result is not as broad and enormous as that of Jaaxy.
Step 2: Go For “LONG-TAIL” Keywords
Long-tail keywords are those with more than 3 words. The more the words in a keyword, the better its ability to rank faster and higher on the search engines.
Do not mistake “LONG TAIL (LT)” for “LOW HANGING FRUIT (LHF)” keywords even though the importance and effect of the two are similar–that is BETTER RANKINGS.
The first (long-tail) refers to the words that make up a keyword phrase, and the later (low hanging fruit) refers to the competition of that particular phrase on Google.
LONG TAIL = MORE WORDS = SEO = BETTER RANKINGS
when I use “Keyword Research” as my keyword search term, although this is very short, it is a very broad topic and it does not tell us what the audience is particularly interested in about the term.
But, when I use the keywords “What Is A Keyword Research” OR “How To Do A Keyword Research For SEO”, we could see that this is a bit more targeted. You could also understand the intention behind those phrases.
“What Is A Keyword Research” makes us understand that this person wants to know about the meaning of Keyword Research. And,
“How To Do A Keyword Research For SEO” gives an in-depth and concise understanding of the persons’ intention that they want to know and learn about the process of researching keywords.
You tell me, what do you think are the best keywords options to utilize out of these three?
Is it “Keyword Research (2-words)“, “What Is A Keyword Research (5-words)“, Or “How To Do A Keyword Research For SEO (8-words)”?
Of course, the answer is very obvious!
That is the power of Long Tail! More words reduce ambiguity and provide better solutions and responses to the intended queries.
Step 3: Check Its Competition And Monthly Searches
Knowing the competition of a Keyword and the number of monthly searches it generates before using it is a very essential and important element in search engine optimization.
You want to make sure the number of articles present (that is) competing for that exact phrase on Google is NOT TOO MANY.
This helps to determine how fast your article would be indexed, and after that, it eventually allows it to be ranked on the first page.
Aside from the keyword having very minimum competition (LHF), that keyword must also be searched for by people while utilizing the engines to answer their queries. It must have a very good amount of monthly searches!
Better Rankings + More Searches = Better Exposure + Higher Clicks = MORE TRAFFIC
Let’s see the competition and monthly searches of the keywords we used in the previous example with the use of Jaaxy:
SEARCH 1 RESULT – “Keyword Research”
Avg represents the average monthly searches.
QSR represents the number of competition the keyword has.
Traffic represents the number of traffic it generates if it is ranked on the first page of Google. And
SEO represents how likely you would rank for this keyword on a 1-100 scale. The higher the better!
From the result above, we could see that although “Keyword Research” has 6608 monthly searches which are quite enormous, its competition is very high.
Which literally, means you will be competing with 194 websites that are already ranked on Google. Even the SEO shows us that the likeness of it being ranked is normal 72. Preferably, it to be in the 80s and 90s.
Since our first priority is quick and high ranking, this particular keyword would not be the right option. Before you can see that high amount of traffic, your article must be seen.
Let’s consider a more targeted Long Tail keyword.
SEARCH 2 RESULT – “What Is A Keyword Research”
From this second search result, you have VERIFIED how Long Tail keywords are a great SEO factor.
The competition is 43 which is pretty low, and the probability of its ranking is very high too – ’89’. In fact, it is great!
Additionally, it has an enormous monthly search (6608). Which means if this article finds its way to the first page of Google, the more people will see it, and it could average monthly traffic of 1124 to your website.
If I am desperately in need of traffic, I would definitely opt for this one after considering the fact that it also has less competition.
SEARCH 3 RESULT – “How To Do A Keyword Research For SEO”
With this third result, we could finally conclude without doubt that the longer a keyword is, the higher its ability to rank. And…
I believe you would agree with me that competing with ’14’ other websites instead of ‘194’ is indeed a more awesome choice.

Step 4: Ensure It Makes Sense & Its Spelling Is Correct
Often times people input wrong spellings and phrases that do not make sense when searching for something online. And, you will definitely come across keywords like that in the course of your research.
These keywords are quite very tempting as you can see. They even meet all the requirements of search engine optimization. Their traffic and competition scale even exceed the ones that are grammatically correct.
Whenever you come across the ones that are not well spelled or do not make sense, you MUST CORRECT it and RECHECK its quota to see if it still does meet the requirements.
If it does not, move on and check for a different phrase. You should not be too sad about it. The human language is so vast that so many phrases could be used to represent the same meaning.
This idea does not imply you need to be an English grammar guru, but rather it is a need to be an AUTHORITY in your niche, which of course yields high rankings.
Step 5: Use It As It Is
Using a keyword the way it is is something you have to always keep in mind and abide by it. The moment you add or remove a word or letter from a keyword, or even rephrase it, the quota changes as well.
You see the difference in the quotas of these phrases that literally mean the same thing. That is what I mean!
If I have to decide which to use from the above keywords, I would go for “the best SEO tools for free”. It is the one that best meets the requirements in all the above 5 step-by-step guides to researching keywords.
I would not want to change anything from it. And if there is a need for an added phrase, that would be included as a separate phrase in the title. This article title is a very good example of that.
“Best free SEO tools” & “the best SEO tools” both have very high monthly searches, but, they also have very high competition even though they are grammatically correct.
Whereas, “best SEO tools free” is not very correct (‘for’ should be added for it to make sense), and its competition is so high albeit it having a 97 SEO first-page ranking probability.
